better late than never

I know that March is already halfway over, but we wanted to share how our February challenge went. To recap: our challenge was to give away the same amount of money that we spent on food for ourselves. We were inspired by Mark 12:31 which states that the second greatest commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself. How can we be loving our neighbor as ourselves when we spend way more money on ourselves?

(For our original post on this challenge click here.)

We ended up spending $800 on food in February ($150 on dining and $650 on groceries). Here is how we gave our $800 away:

(1) We had Young Life leadership at our house and fed all of the leaders (who love on high school kids and give so much of their time to this ministry). Gave away: $130
(2) Blake and the 3 older kids went and bought McDonald's breakfast sandwiches and coffee and handed them out to homeless people. Gave away: $100This is the kids getting ready to hand out the food

(3) We sponsored another child through Compassion International for one year. We already sponsor a girl named Tsehaye who lives in Ethiopia. She is 8 and we chose her so that Riley and her could write each other (and they have). So, this time we chose a 5 year old boy from Guatemala. His name is Jonathan and we hope that Ford and he can become friends. Gave away: $384
(4) For Thanksgiving our church hooked us up with a family that couldn't afford a Thanksgiving dinner. We took Thanksgiving dinner to the Ramirez family and fell in love with them. They are a family of 5 (mom, dad, grandma, and 2 kids) living in a 2 bedroom apartment. We stopped by today and left a gift card to the grocery store for them. Gave away: $200

(Disclaimer- I list all of these things for our accountability and because this is our online journal. We were slacking off on this challenge and taking our time. This blog truly kept us accountable and helped us get our butts in gear.)

This challenge was really scary, but really amazing. It was a huge exercise in faith and prayer. The extra $800 came from God because we budget Blake's paycheck and use every penny of it every month. We LOVED giving it away. It is part of our family's mission to one day give away 50% of our income.

So, what is our March challenge? I'm sure that you're all dying to know. Our challenge is for Blake and I to spend at least 3 hours a week together learning Spanish. This challenge will actually be for March and April. I know that it's not as exciting as last month's challenge, but the reason behind it is super exciting. We will be sharing that news soon....

Beautiful work of love, Goodfellows! I noticed on PBS tonight, they are having a special on your grandmother; with interviews from your father, uncles, and aunt. You're surrounded by strength, guys!

You don't know me but I read your blog through JTP's. I hope you don't mind.
I think you are truly an inspiring family. You make me want to be a better person, (step)parent and a better Christian. I also admire your quest to adopt a child as it has always been a dream of mine to adopt a child from Africa. Not too sure if it will ever happen.

Good luck and God bless you all.

Hi Sarah and Blake! I am so excited about this challenge. Daniel and I have been blown away lately by how radical life is meant to be with Jesus--and this was such a sweet reminder of obedience and sacrifice in a radical way. Amazing! I hope you guys are well-- your children are so handsome and beautiful and fun to see!!
